Control of Labour Costs / Better Productivity

It is true to say that the most challenging overhead for hoteliers in recent
times is wages, salaries and staff costs. The Research Department of the World's top Hotel School, Cornell University, recently surveyed 170 managers from over 25 different countries and asked them 'What Keeps You Up at Night?'

The top concern for 57% of respondents was the use of human capital or,
in common language, how to attract, retain, motivate, train and get the most
from
hospitality employees. The measurement of productivity is absolutely vital
to any hotel. With proper systems in place, staff can deliver more value by working smarter rather than harder.

Cost-effective labour scheduling is one of the most important tasks that
managers perform in hotels. At any given moment, having too few employees
or not those who have the necessary skills - can result in poor
customer
service; frustrated, overworked employees and lost sales. On the other hand, having too many employees reduces operating margins. Labour scheduling is
the act of balancing customer demand, employee productivity and profitability.
